Benzophenone Functions & Applications

Benzophenone serves as a Type II photoinitiator in ultraviolet-curable materials. When incorporated into an appropriate curing system, it helps initiate radical polymerization of unsaturated oligomers such as acrylates after UV exposure. Documented application areas include graphic arts and coatings for wood, plastic and metal. Here its purpose is to start a chemical curing reaction, rather than to substantiate personal sun protection. This unsubstituted compound must not be confused with the differently substituted benzophenone ingredients used as cosmetic UV filters. Selection for a coating requires confirmation of the supplied chemical grade and evaluation within the complete resin and irradiation system. A commercial photoinitiator's performance cannot establish the cure response of Reveda material.
