Calcium Thioglycolate Functions & Applications

Calcium thioglycolate is an ingredient used in chemical depilatory formulation development. The calcium salt provides a particular thioglycolate identity, which should be distinguished from salts with other counterions and from a prepared multi-ingredient hair removal cream. That function differs from mechanical exfoliation or removal by a wax. The complete depilatory system determines exposure conditions, texture and the way the active is delivered, so raw material identity is only one part of development. Confirm the hydration state, assay and supplied preparation before calculating its contribution to a formula. Requirements for the intended market and product category need separate review. Neither the ingredient name nor a study of another thioglycolate preparation establishes safety or an appropriate application time for a finished depilatory.
