Carbomer 980 Functions & Applications

Carbomer 980 is used as a thickener, suspending agent and stabilizer in personal care formulations. A documented manufacturer grade produces high-viscosity systems with clarity and short-flow behaviour, supporting applications such as gels, lotions and creams. Suspension can be important in hair-gel development, while the rheological profile affects how a product dispenses and spreads. The 980 grade designation should be checked against the supplier specification rather than treated as interchangeable with every carbomer. Separately qualified pharmaceutical grades also exist, but that qualification cannot be inferred from the number alone. Establish the intended cosmetic process and solvent system, then assess clarity, consistency and physical stability with the full formulation before selecting the material.
