Hesperidin Functions & Applications

Hesperidin is a flavanone glycoside used in laboratory analysis of botanical materials and citrus related products. Appropriately characterized standards support chromatographic determination of hesperidin in plant extracts, fruit juices and formulated samples. This function is useful for identity checks and method development, where the analyst needs to distinguish the glycoside from its aglycone, hesperetin, and from other related flavonoids. Hesperidin methyl chalcone is another separately specified material and should not be treated as the same ingredient. A commercial hesperidin listing does not by itself qualify the powder as an analytical or pharmacopoeial reference standard. Suitability for quantitative work depends on assigned purity, characterization and the chosen method, while any food or cosmetic application requires a separate supplied-grade assessment.
