Maize Starch Functions & Applications

Maize starch is used as a filler, disintegrating ingredient and, after suitable cooking, a binder in solid-formulation processes. Native maize starch is practically insoluble in cold water, and its swelling behaviour contributes to its role in tablet disintegration. Heating changes how the starch interacts with water, allowing a cooked preparation to bind particles during granulation. Manufacturer applications include tablets, hard capsules, granules and pellet premixes. These roles should be distinguished from those of pregelatinised or chemically modified starches, which can have different preparation and performance requirements. Confirm the supplied starch type before selecting a process. Evaluate powder distribution, binding and disintegration in the actual blend, using documentation appropriate to the intended product.
