Mannitol Functions & Applications

Mannitol is a polyol used as a diluent in solid formulations and, in selected grades, as an excipient for directly compressed tablets. In wet granulation, part of the mannitol can dissolve in the granulation liquid and recrystallise during drying, contributing to the structure of the resulting granules. Its sweet, cooling taste is relevant to chewable or orally dispersible formats where mouthfeel matters. Direct compression depends on a specifically suitable particle grade, rather than on chemical identity alone. This listing does not establish such a grade. Product development should consider the required particle size, granulation route and sensory profile together, then assess flow, compactability and compatibility with the other ingredients.
