Polyvinyl Alcohol Functions & Applications

Polyvinyl alcohol is a water-compatible polymer used in film-forming, binding and protective-colloid applications. Established industrial uses include textile sizing, paper treatment, adhesives, ceramic manufacture and emulsion polymerisation. In each case, the polymer serves a different processing requirement, from helping particles remain bound to producing a continuous film. Grade choice is therefore central to application suitability. A generic polyvinyl alcohol listing does not define degree of hydrolysis, chain length or the temperature needed for dissolution, and should remain separate from the catalog's Hot and Cold items. Determine the required solution viscosity and water response before selecting a supply. Process trials should establish preparation conditions and the relevant film, adhesion or binding behaviour.
