Silica Functions & Applications

Silica is used in appropriately specified dentifrice grades to provide cleaning or thickening functions. Manufacturer dental ranges distinguish these roles, showing that the same general chemical name can cover materials with different particle structures and absorption behaviour. A cleaning silica helps deliver the required brushing performance, while a thickening silica contributes to the paste's body and stability. The abrasive, binder, humectant and active system must work together to produce the intended mouthfeel and available active content. This generic listing does not establish a dental grade or an abrasion profile. Selection therefore requires the actual material specification and evaluation in the complete toothpaste, rather than assuming that any silica is suitable for oral care.
