Sodium Ascorbate Functions & Applications

Sodium ascorbate is the sodium salt of vitamin C and is selected for antioxidant and stabilization functions in appropriately specified formulations. Manufacturer technical information documents its ability to scavenge reactive species, including specialized pharmaceutical systems in which oxidative degradation must be controlled. That evidence concerns a qualified ingredient and a complete formulation, rather than establishing a medical use for an unspecified bulk supply. Sodium ascorbate should also be distinguished from sodium ascorbyl phosphate, which is a different vitamin C derivative. The intended application determines the required assay, impurity and quality documentation. Formulation development should evaluate oxidation control, solution conditions and the complete product's stability before choosing the supplied grade.
