Sorbitan Mono Palmitate (Span 40) Functions & Applications

Sorbitan monopalmitate, commonly associated with Span 40, is used to support emulsification and structure in cosmetic formulations. Croda identifies its Span 40 material as Sorbitan Palmitate, with applications in skin care and colour cosmetics and a wax-like contribution to lipophilic mixtures. Pigment wetting is relevant when colourants must be distributed through oils or an emulsion. The monopalmitate wording and Span designation should be checked against the supplied ester specification rather than interpreted as proof of a chemically pure single ester. This listing may overlap the generic Sorbitan Palmitate item, but a distinct grade has not been established. Evaluate oil-phase compatibility, texture and emulsion stability with the actual material and chosen co-emulsifiers.
