Squalane Functions & Applications

Squalane is an emollient used to improve spreading and the skin feel of cosmetic oil phases. Manufacturer applications include skin-care emulsions and hair-care products, where it provides a smooth lubricating component without acting as the primary emulsifier. It can be considered when a formulation needs an oil-compatible sensory ingredient with good stability. The amount and type of other oils, waxes and emulsifiers determine the final product's weight, flow and after-feel. Squalane should be distinguished from squalene, which is a different chemical material. Its name also does not establish the feedstock: origin and any naturality or sustainability claims require documentation for the actual supply, alongside purity and formulation compatibility.
