Triclosan Functions & Applications

Triclosan is an antimicrobial ingredient evaluated for preservative use in defined cosmetic categories, including toothpaste. Its role is to control microbial growth within a formulation; that function must be distinguished from a finished product claim to prevent illness or disinfect skin. Selection therefore starts with the intended product category and destination market. In the United States, triclosan is ineligible for the consumer antiseptic wash monograph, so it should not be presented as a routine antibacterial hand soap ingredient. For other development work, establish the applicable legal route, material identity and purity before formulation trials. Preservation efficacy and compatibility require assessment in the actual finished formula rather than assumptions based on the raw material name.
