Aluminum Starch Octenylsuccinate Functions & Applications

Aluminum starch octenylsuccinate is a modified starch used to adjust the sensory properties of cosmetic powders and emulsions. Its absorbent function makes it relevant where oil-phase components contribute an overly greasy or tacky feel. Applications include facial and body lotions, makeup powders, color cosmetics and deodorant formulations. Within an emulsion it can contribute to a more powdery afterfeel, while in dry products its particulate character is considered alongside flow and blending behavior. The ingredient should be distinguished from unmodified starch and from octenylsuccinate starches identified with another counterion. Particle properties, botanical source and any additional surface treatment affect grade selection. The formulation's oil load and ingredient balance determine the outcome; a particular branded starch's stability range or sensory test result should not be assumed for every supply.
