Propylene Glycol: Overview

Propylene glycol is a colorless, odorless, and slightly viscous liquid commonly used in a wide range of products, including cosmetics, skincare products, pharmaceuticals, food, and antifreeze. It serves multiple functions in various applications.

In cosmetics and personal care products, propylene glycol acts as a humectant, helping to retain moisture in the skin by drawing water from the environment into the outer layer of the skin. This property makes it valuable in formulations such as moisturizers, lotions, and serums, where it contributes to skin hydration and smoothness.

Additionally, propylene glycol functions as a solvent, helping to dissolve and stabilize other ingredients in formulations. It also has emollient properties, which can help to soften and smooth the skin.

In the food industry, propylene glycol is used as a food additive and preservative, as well as a carrier for flavors and colors. It is generally recognized as safe (GRAS) by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) when used in accordance with regulations.

In antifreeze, propylene glycol serves as a safer alternative to ethylene glycol, as it is less toxic and safer for use in environments where accidental ingestion may occur.

Overall, propylene glycol is a versatile ingredient with a wide range of applications, valued for its moisturizing, solvent, and preservative properties.
