Sodium Fluoride Functions & Applications

Sodium fluoride is used as an anticaries active in specified oral-care formulations. The United States OTC monograph includes defined dentifrice and rinse categories, illustrating that suitability is tied to the finished product's fluoride conditions and performance testing. In toothpaste development, the fluoride source must work with the abrasive, binder and other ingredients so that the required available fluoride is maintained. Sodium fluoride differs chemically from sodium monofluorophosphate and stannous fluoride, making equal-weight replacement inappropriate. The raw material's identity and oral-care quality documentation therefore matter before formulation begins. The complete product still requires the relevant testing, packaging and labelling assessment for its intended category and destination market.
